Traditional Ruler Calls For Establishment Of College of Agriculture in Anambra

Igwe Oranu Chidume of Omor Kingdom

By Luchee Igwe

Igwe Oranu Chidume of Omor Kingdom in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra, has called for establishment of a College of Agriculture to drive revolutionary development of agriculture in the state.

Chidume made the call on Friday, while  addressing newsmen during ‘Omor-In-Focus,’ a ceremony that marks the beginning of the Annual Ofala Celebration in the community.

He said there was the need to establish a college of agriculture as there was no University of Agriculture in the state to motivate research activities to help meet current requirements in the agric sector.

According to him, Omor community in Ayamelum  will be an appropriate location for the college of agriculture because it is an agrarian community.

“It is important to establish a college of agriculture in Anambra to serve as a training center for agricultural progress and revolutionary development of agriculture in the state.

“Omor community is ready to tap into the proposed smart agriculture agenda of  Gov. Charles Soludo’s led government. So, we suggest that the college be situated in our community.

“This will assist our community in terms of infrastructural development, boost agricultural productivity and reduce post harvest losses recorded by farmers.

“If the government should yield to our request, our community will not only be an economic hub, but will increase the gross domestic productivity  of the state and the country at large,” he said.

The Traditional Ruler also urged the state government to provide steady power supply, portable water and good roads to promote industrialisation in the community.

Also speaking, Dr Amobi Chiamogu, a Chieftain of the community, urged the state government to provide storage facilities for farmers to prevent post harvest losses.

“During rainy season our people record enormous post harvest losses, so we are calling on the government to provide us with storage facilities.

“We are also calling on the government to provide us with access roads. When flooding occurs and the roads are submerged, we are cut off from other communities and It becomes impossible for farmers to evacuate their farm produce.l, ” he said.

In his remarks, Justice Paul Obidigwe, fomer Chief Judge of Anambra commended the Oganiru Age Grade for taking up infrastructural projects to drive development in the community.
