NIA Reiterates Commitment to Eradicate Fake Insurance Certificate
Determined to eradicate fake motor and marine insurance certificates in Nigeria, the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has encouraged underwriters to upload insurance policies to the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID).
They have equally urged Nigerians to dial *565*11# to verify the genuineness of their Insurance policies.
The Director-General, (NIA), Mrs. Yetunde Ilori, who reiterated the association’s commitment to eradicate fake insurance certificates in the market said in order to ensure that insurance companies upload to NIID, NIA have visited some insurance firms to encourage them on the need to do so.
Ilori who said although the response on the use of USSD code to check insurance policies is encouraging, urged Nigerians to ensure effective use of the USSD code *565*11#.
She said the NIID USSD code is a new concept, which she said is evolving, adding that the NIA is doing everything within its powers to ensure that the initiative works and solicited the support of Nigerians.
The association initiated the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID), a platform to verify the genuineness of insurance policies, says Ilori.
According to her, the platform is considered an important step in the fight against insurance fraud and economic sabotage.
Ilori said prior to the establishment of the platform, cloning and faking of insurance certificates were thriving business in the country, but now, it has reduced.
She said that platform would further protect the image of the industry and also ensure that only insured vehicles were driven on Nigerian roads.
NIA DG noted that the association would continue to evolve technology to solve challenges confronting the industry and to deepen insurance penetration in the country.
To deepen the impact of the platform, the DG said the association in collaboration with Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) launched the USSD *565*11# code and allow easy access regardless of internet connection.
She said the code allows vehicle owners to access instant information about their Motor Insurance on NIID.
