NCC Identifies Factors Contributing To Data Depletion For Mobile Subscribers

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), through its Consumer Affairs Bureau, has identified seven factors contributing to data depletion for mobile subscribers, even as they refuted claims that telecommunication companies are draining Nigerians’ data bundles.

This statement comes amid increased complaints from subscribers about rapid data depletion. The commission attributed the issue to active background apps and malware.

They said “Some apps consume data even when not actively used, as background data usage can quickly add up.”

Automatic updates for apps, operating systems, and other software also consume significant data. GPS and other location services like Google Maps can be data-intensive, and advertisements use data even without user interaction.

Roaming is another factor, with data roaming charges quickly depleting data allowances when traveling abroad.

Malware and viruses can also consume data without the user’s knowledge, and it’s important to remove any infections promptly.

Additionally, excessive usage, such as streaming videos or music, downloading large files, or using data-intensive apps for long periods, can deplete data limits quickly.

The NCC advised subscribers to monitor their data usage by turning off background data for specific apps, disabling automatic updates, limiting location services for certain apps, and installing ad-blockers to prevent unsolicited advertisement.
