The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof. Chris Bode; President, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Francis Adedayo Faduyile; President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Pharm. Sam Ohuabunwa and Coca-Cola Company were the deserving individuals and corporate organization honoured by Health Writers Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) with award at its 2019 Symposium and Award ceremony.
The 10th Symposium/Award Ceremony with the theme, “Curbing the High Rate of Brain Drain in the Nigerian Health Sector,” took place recently at NECA House, Alausa, Lagos.
The event was attended by stakeholders in the health sector both individuals and corporate as well as government functionaries.
Speaking before presenting awards to the awardees, President, HEWAN, Mrs. Chioma Obinna, extolled the qualities and virtues of the awardees, adding that they were honoured based on their performance either as an individual or as a corporate entity.
Giving insight on why Prof. Chris Bode, CMD, LUTH, was honoured with HEWAN’s Best Chief Medical Director of the Year, Chioma said he deserved the award because of his pragmatic leadership. “Under his watch as CMD, he has shown pragmatic leadership. In the last few years, healthcare services have improved and particularly, he will be remembered for his efforts in managing the usual crises at LUTH. Some of the areas he has done well include power supply, security, improved emergency services among others.”
On why Dr. Francis Faduyile, the NMA President, was honoured as HEWAN’s Best Medical Union Leader of the Year, Chioma said he was honoured because of his sterling leadership qualities which she said has impacted the medical profession positively.
“As a vibrant Union Leader, he was able to keep the association together and since he became president of NMA, incessant strikes by Medical Doctors have reduced to the barest minimum. This shows that his mission to reposition the NMA as the foremost professional association in Nigeria and Africa through quality leadership is not in doubt.
“His intension to bring harmony among professional bodies in the Nigerian health sector has earned him HEWAN Best Medical Union Leader of the Year,” Chioma added.
On why Pharm Ohuabunwa, the PSN boss was honoured by HEWAN, she said he was honoured as a result of his demonstrative leadership, which she said has impacted positively on pharmacy profession.
Speaking on why Coco-Cola was honoured, Chioma said the company was honoured because of quality products; protection of environment, promotion of recycling and continued support for HEWAN.
Responding on behalf of the awardees, Pharm. George Okon, who represented PSN president, thanked HEWAN for the honour done them, adding that the award is a call for greater performance and promised to continue to do those things that earned them the awards.
