These projects were executed by various clubs under Region 3 and commissioned during the District Governor’s visit to the Region.

The District Governor, District 404B2 of Lions Club International, Lion Kayode Oshinuga, who emphasized the need to promote more environmentally sustainable projects, commended Region three Lions Clubs for embarking on environmentally sustainable projects.

He said there are five areas that the Lions Club focuses on, and protecting the environment is one of them.

“We have put little emphasis on the environment so far. Good health in fact stems from the environment we live in. Our life span is determined by the environment we live in and that is why as must be conscious of what is happening in our environment.

Lion Oshinuga said promoting environmental sustainability culture of a clean environment goes a long way to influence the way we live.

“We have been charged to educate members of the public on environmental sustainability, we will embark on massive advocacy in June during the World Environmental Day on how we can protect the environment,” Oshinuga said.

He explained that the club always prioritised the environment, and that was why the Lions inaugurated the solar-powered computer laboratory at the Oregun Senior Secondary school.

On the Solar-Powered Computer Laboratory, the District governor thanked Region 3 Lions Clubs for their initiative describing it as ‘exclusive’ and emphasized the importance to invest in youth education and empowerment.

“If you want a better tomorrow, start investing today. Your investment in these children is to make them better citizens tomorrow.  Any investment in digitalization is never a waste,” Lion Oshinuga said.

Earlier in her remarks at the Oregun Senior Secondary School, Ikeja, Region  3 Chairperson, Lion Anita Nana-Okuribido, said the project which was jointly executed by Region 3 Lions Clubs and Smiling Simon GreenBuild Foundation was part of the Region’s effort at promoting environmental sustainability and education in Oregun community.

“This is the first time we commissioned a green legacy project, a solar computer laboratory for students at the Oregun Senior High School.

“We are concerned about environmental sustainability; the legacy project is to make the students know that they have to be energy efficient, energy sufficient and energy independent. It is our way of mitigating the climate change effects.

“It is for the purpose of transforming the lives and the mindset of young people, particularly the students in the secondary schools, for them to be more proactive, to think positively while making use of the computers.

“The computers are to boost the students’ intellectual ability for enhanced learning. It is not for them to dabble into negative things.

She said the One Oregun community child, One solar reading lamp initiative, is aimed at fighting the dangers of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur emission from Kerosene which she said is very injurious to health.

She said 1000 school children from the community will benefit from the initiative, adding that they will get sponsors for the lamps which costs N5,000 each.

Also speaking, the Principal of Oregun Senior High school, Mrs Mobolanle Ojowolo, thanked the Lions for the donations and called for more interventions in government schools.

“Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to do a lot of online teaching. The computer laboratory that has been rehabilitated into a solar laboratory by the Lions Club will enhance our online teaching.

“The solar computer laboratory will provide a broader space for the students to explore and research on all subjects they are being taught.

“The children will now have access to more computers, the Internet and an enabling environment to learn.

“We are grateful to the Lions Club for the intervention in the school and we hope for more,” the principal said.

The Oba of Oregun, Dr Olusesan Akingbola, also commended the club and enjoined the students to make appropriate use of the computers.

“We are grateful to the Lions Club and I thank you for doing these projects in our school. Do not stop here, you can do more,” Akingbola said.
