Jubilation filled the air at Lafarge Golf Club, Sagamu, as Akonte Ekine etched his name in golf history with a spectacular hole-in-one. Playing off a handicap of 28, Akonte achieved the rare feat on the 16th hole using a 5 iron and a Taylormade 3 ball, while sporting his signature Titleist cap.
The remarkable shot came on the challenging 128-meter par-3, known for its water hazards and tree-lined fairways, under the scorching afternoon sun. A hole-in-one, also called an ace, is a rare and revered achievement in golf, requiring a combination of skill, precision, and luck.
The historic moment was first announced by the front caddie, igniting excitement among Akonte’s flight members: Otunba Caleb Adeyemo (handicap 26), Alhaji Hakeem Amoo (handicap 23), and Olaitan Shabi (handicap 24).
Alhaji Hakeem Amoo described the shot as a “unique and worthy achievement.”
Olaitan Shabi remarked that witnessing such a feat for the first time was a “story to cherish.”
Otunba Caleb Adeyemo praised the moment as “a testament to Akonte’s commitment to the game.”
In his elation, Akonte dedicated the achievement to his wife, Adeola Ekine, his children, and members of the Titans Group at Sadiq Abubakar Golf Club and Lafarge Golf Club. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play among such inspiring individuals.
According to the National Hole-in-One Registry, the odds of achieving this milestone are 12,500 to 1 for amateurs and 2,500 to 1 for professionals. The first recorded hole-in-one dates back to 1868, achieved by Tom Morris at the Prestwick Open Championship.
Akonte’s incredible shot not only cements his place in golf’s exclusive list of ace players but also serves as a source of pride and inspiration for golfers across the country.
