Federal Executive Council Wishes Osinbajo Speedy Recovery
Nigerian Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo
The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Sunday wished Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo quick recovery following a successful operation on account of a fracture of his right femur (thigh bone), possibly related to a long standing injury associated with the game of squash.
The surgical operation which was performed by a team of specialist doctors in Lagos has been reported to be successful.
A statement issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha reads, ‘As Professor Osinbajo recuperates from the surgical operation, FEC wishes him quick recovery so as to continue to give the needed support for the overall growth and stability of the country.’
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has undergone a successful surgery to treat recurrent pains in his leg.
Adedoyin Dosunmu-Ogunbi Medical Director, Duchess International Hospital, Ikeja, announced this in a statement on Saturday.
Laolu Akande, the spokesperson to Mr Osinbajo, had in a tweet earlier, announced that the vice president had to undergo the surgery to treat a fracture in his leg.
According to Mr Akande, the vice president sustained the injury while playing squash.
“VP Osinbajo is in the hospital today for a surgical procedure on account of recurrent pain in the leg possibly sustained from an injury while playing squash. His doctors would give an update of the treatment later today,” the tweet reads.
‘VP alert and well’
The statement stated that the surgery was on “account of a fracture of his right femur (thigh bone),” adding that he will be discharged in a few days.
The surgery, the statement further said, was performed by a team of specialist doctors, including Wallace Ogufere (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon); Om Lahoti (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon); Babajide Lawson (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon); Ken Adegoke (Consultant in Anaesthesia & Critical Care); Oladimeji Agbabiaka (Consultant Anaesthetist); and Adedoyin Dosunmu-Ogunbi (Consultant Physician & Medical Director).
Mr Osinbajo’s decision to undergo treatment in Nigeria is a departure from his principal, President Muhammadu Buhari, who jets out overseas for all medical needs.
Meanwhile, the Vice President has given reasons why he decided to have the surgery in Nigeria instead of traveling to another country.
Vanguardngr.com reports that although his doctors advised him to consider doing the surgical operation to correct a fracture on his right femur (thigh bone) abroad, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo insisted on using a Nigerian hospital and medical experts for the procedure.
According to sources close to Duchess International Hospital where the operation took place on Saturday, some of the government and private practice doctors of the Vice President made the suggestion because the going abroad option is often usually considered by such class of patients and at times the option could also seem more seamless.
But one of the doctors who coordinated the whole operation, Dr. Yemi Onabowale, who is the founder of the Reddington Hospital, was quoted to have said “the VP was clear that he had confidence in Nigerian doctors both at home and abroad and would prefer they handle the operation.”
His preference to have the surgery done in Nigeria is also being regarded as a major boost for the government’s often stated objective of a reversed medical tourism as some voices in the healthcare sector have expressed excitement at Prof Osinbajo’s choice.
He was also said to have argued that doing the operation in Nigeria would not only encourage Nigerian doctors who are among the best anywhere in the world, but it would also help develop the capacity here in Nigeria.
