Efekoha promises advancement of insurance education and professionalism

The 49th President/Chairman, Governing Council, Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), Eddie Efekoha, has promised the advancement of insurance education and professionalism during his tenure.
Efekoha said this in his acceptance message after taking an oath of office as the new helmsman of the Institute at a colourful investiture ceremony organized the Institute in his honour in Lagos recently.
He said the programmes to be executed during his one year administration as the president of CIIN were carefully selected.
He said his administration will be guided by the continue of continuity while concentrating on the completion of on-going positive projects and policies by successive leaderships in addition to embarking on new projects and plans.
In advancing Insurance education and professionalism, he said he will give attention to infrastructural development at the college of insurance.
On the advancement of insurance education, Efekoha said he will make the CIIN Examination more accessible and affordable for the student; promote the emergence of a new generation of insurance professionals; review the insurance textbooks for Secondary Schools; accreditation and establishment of new Insurance programmes/ department in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria e.g. University of Lagos, MSC Risk Management, B.Sc. Insurance in Babcock University and University of Jos amongst others.
On Professional Development, he pledged continued Collaboration with National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and other arms of the industry to enhance post-qualification development of practitioners.
He said he will also ensure continuous development of the manpower, process and physical structure of the Institute to ensure responsive and efficient manpower among others as well as sustain established working relationship with the CII London.
Earlier in his keynote address, the Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Muhammed Kari, who commended the performance of the out-going President, Mrs. Funmi Babington-Ashaye for her good works, said he was grateful to be associated with his achievements.
Kari charged the incoming president, Mr. Efekoha, to ensure the full implementation of the Review of Code of Ethics initiated by the leadership of the out-going administration.
He also called on the incoming administration to ensure that every practitioner in insurance industry in the country becomes a member of the Institute as a way of entrenching professionalism among practitioners.
In his welcome address, the out-going president, Mrs. Funmi Babington-Ashaye, said Eddie Efekoha was highly qualified for the position and expressed hope that he will take the Institute to enviable height.
She called on stakeholders in the industry to accord the incoming administration adequate support that will enhance their performance and success.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the event, Professor Bruce Onobrakpeya, expressed displeasure on the low patronage of insurance business in Nigeria, saying the contribution of the industry to the national economy is very low when compared to other African nations in the continent.
He appealed to the industry stakeholders to rise up to the challenge, even as he appealed to Nigerians to put their differences behind and come together as a nation, to make Nigeria great again.
“Nigeria is a great nation with a robust past. We must come together, treat one another with love without religious or ethnic bias,” he advised.
Coincidentally, Mr. Eddie Agberia Efekoha, was born in 1959 the same year the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria was established.
Eddie is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc; immediate past Chairman, Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) and an insurance professional to the core with tract records of achievement for his credit.
