Economic Sabotage: Police Busts Illegal Petroleum Refining Site, Arrests 2 Suspects, Recovers Trucks

Police operatives attached to the IGP Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering (IGP-STFPIB) in the late hours of September 7, 2022, successfully busted an illegal petroleum refining operation in Edo State.

This follows the interception of intelligence on activities of an alleged illicit petroleum products refining syndicate operating adjacent to Agbor Junction, Benin City, Edo State via a whistleblower through the recently created Nigeria National Petroleum Company’s (NNPC) Command and Control Centre Portal.

Consequent to the raid on the illegal petroleum refining site, three (3) empty DAF Trucks, thirty-one (31) immobile surface tanks — 7 of which were loaded with unspecified quantity of petroleum products, were discovered by the Police. Additionally, two suspects, one Chinedu Iyanabor aged 18 and Sunday Iyagbesun aged 52, were arrested during the raid. preliminary investigations reveal the site was also used as a dumpsite for petroleum products.

According to a statement by CSP OLUMUYIWA ADEJOBI, Force Public Relations Officer, Inspector-General of Police tasked special enforcement units on prevention of activities of economic saboteurs to ensure deployment of necessary manpower and other operational assets to ensure a total clampdown on criminal activities detriment to the economic growth of the nation.

The IGP has similarly supervised the strengthening of the Unit with a charge to intensify efforts, in conjunction with local police officers, to sustain police approved operational standards in tackling economic sabotage, crimes and criminality in the country. He equally charged the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Unit to embark on strict supervision of the Unit in compliance with the directives.

In another development, the Nigeria Police Force is set to unveil its sporting talents at the 13th Biennial Police Games scheduled to take place in the beautiful and serene city of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital from 23rd — 30th November, 2022.

The week-long historic sporting event is expected to be declared open by the Special Guest of Honour, the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

The event will also have the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel as the chief host, and other very important dignitaries.

As conceived by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc+, NPM, fdc, who is passionate about sports development in the NPF, over 4500 male and female police athletes drawn from the 17 Zonal Commands and the Force Headquarters will feature and compete in several indoor and outdoor sporting activities which include athletics, football, basketball, table tennis, lawn tennis, judo, taekwondo, weightlifting, golf, chess, squash, shooting, karate, swimming, hockey, badminton, triathlon, handball amongst other sporting events.

The 13th Biennial Police Games will yet again provide an opportunity for hidden sporting talents within the Force to be discovered as they will be given a platform to showcase their aptitudes to the world and subsequently make Nigeria proud as constantly exhibited by the Nigeria Police Force in sports business. Additionally, the event will afford the Force an ample occasion to engage the public, build goodwill and advance its community policing ideals anchored on mutual trust, understanding and partnership with the public.

It is pertinent to state that the Nigeria Police has produced prominent sports men and women who have gone on to raise the bar wherever they have flown the flag of the nation, it is in cognizance of this that the Police Games has evolved over the years to become an integral part of the rich history and proud tradition of the Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian nation at large
