Doubts Persist Over Aviation Sector Recovery In 2021

Players in the Nigerian aviation industry have said the sector may not recover in 2021 due to several factors, among which are unfriendly government policies.

Those who spoke to Daily Independent said that unless the government helped airlines and other businesses in the sector to remain in business, the recent palliatives – rather than take them out of the woods – would rather compound their challenges.

They specifically said that there had not been any practical step by the government to elevate the sector, even when other governments around the world had been unveiling strategies to stabilise the industry in their climes.

Mrs. Olatokunbo Fagbemi, the Group Managing Director, Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Plc, said that for the sector to recover, businesses should look inward.

According to her, domestic cargo through airlines should be encouraged, stressing that this would be beneficial to every organisation in the sector, including the government.

She said: “Now, we have other competitive modes of transport; the train has come, we have articulated vehicles on the road and others.

“So, the thing is to look at domestic cargo. We all have to play our part and everyone should realise that they are competing with other modes of transport and whatever that can be done to support cargo should be done.”

Engr. Sheri Kyari, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Finum Aviation Services, said the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the aviation industry globally may not go away soon, especially in the wake of the second wave of the pandemic..
