Christian Group Seeks FG Intervention On High Cost Of Living, Says ‘Nigerians Are Hungry’
A Christian group, Christian Conscience, has expressed displeasure at the increasing cost of food and fuel in the country while also urging the federal government to do something urgent about the situation.
According to Church Times Nigeria, the group expressed its displeasure at end of its monthly meeting in Lagos on October 22.
In a statement jointly signed by its national chairman, Dr Mrs Yetunde Akinluyi and its national secretary, Rev Dr Kolawole Verrals, the group says, “Mr President, there is hunger in the land, majority of our people are suffering. There is scarcity of food, with available ones being too expensive due to high cost of living. We need your urgent intervention”.
It noted that the ripple effects of the high cost of transportation as a result of hike in fuel prices is becoming unbearable to citizens.
‘The government has to live up to its responsibilities by ensuring ease of living for its citizens.’ the group declared.
It called on government to expedite action on the CNG initiative which it believes ‘will cut down on prices of fuel’
The statement reads further, ‘.We are told that your government is doing everything possible to make this initiative go round in the country, more energy and adequate funding should be deplored towards the programme”.
Christian Conscience also called on the Tinubu led government to urgently intervene in the face off between marketers, NNPC and Dangote refinery, so that the much awaited succour we expected from Dangote can trickle down to the masses”.
It expressed displeasure at the high tariff on electricity ‘ that is causing small scale businesses to fold up.’
While noting that power supply has largely become regular, it said, ‘It is the responsibility of government to cater to the needs of the people in this area ‘
It urged government to find a way of reducing the high tariff across the nation.
