NCC Restates Commitment To Fostering Stable, Compliant Telecom Ecosystem In Nigeria
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to fostering a stable and compliant telecommunications ecosystem in Nigeria.
The Commission said this in a statement issued by its Director, Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka recently after the Commission has successfully mediated and reached amicable resolution in an interconnect debt dispute between MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. (MTN) and Globacom Limited (Globacom).
The NCC intervention in the matter, which led to the amicable resolution of the dispute, according to the statement, was aimed at forestalling any potential disruptions to subscribers.
It should be recalled that NCC on January 8, 2024 issued a public notice and notified the public and subscribers of Globacom Limited (Globacom) that approval has been granted for the partial disconnection of Globacom from MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. (MTN), due to non-settlement of interconnect charges.
Globacom was also notified of the application made by MTN, and was given opportunity to comment and state its case.
The Commission, in the notice stated “The Commission, having examined the application and circumstances surrounding the indebtedness, determined that Globacom does not have sufficient or justifiable reason for non-payment of the interconnect charges.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in its recent statement has announced that the interconnect debt dispute between the two telecommunication firms has been amicably resolved, restating its commitment to the growth of the sector.
While calling on operators to ensure strict adherence to the terms and conditions of licenses, NCC stated in the statement, “The Commission reiterates that strict adherence to the terms and conditions of licenses, particularly those delineated in interconnection agreements, is imperative for all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and other licensees within the telecommunications industry.
“In order to proactively address and prevent future instances of interconnect indebtedness within the industry, the Commission will be requesting relevant records and regular updates from MNOs, as well as adopting a transparent approach towards industry indebtedness.”
